You might have acquired a Chromecast device that is already in use by someone. It might even be that you have a Chromecast device and want to give it out to someone. Of course, both scenarios require changing the account owner.

Change the owner by Chromecast by factory resetting the device and removing any previous account. After this, it is ready to be linked to a new owner’s account.

Keep reading as we go through the steps necessary to factory reset a Chromecast to get it up and running smoothly for its new owner.

Unlink Chromecast from your Google Account

To change the owner of Chromecast, the first thing you have to do is to remove the Chromecast from your account. There are two ways you can unlink your Google account from the device. One is from your account in a browser, and the other is from Chromecast with Google TV.

Unlink From Browser

You can visit your Google account page on a browser to unlink it from Chromecast with Google TV.

Here is how to do this:

  • Go to My Account and Device Activity
  • Log in to the Google account linked to the Google TV if not already
  • Find the Chromecast with Google TV and remove it

The unlinking will be done in a jiffy afterward.

Unlink From Chromecast With Google TV

Rather than unlink from a browser, you can also unlink from Chromecast with Google TV.

To do this:

  • One the user icon at the top right corner
  • Select Settings
  • Select Accounts & Sign-in and select your Google account
  • Select Remove
  • Select Remove Account

Confirm that the unlinking is done afterward.

Factory Reset Chromecast

After Chromecast has been removed from the previous account, the next step is to factory reset it to remove all the old data. The way to do this depends on the model of the Chromecast device.

Chromecast with Google TV

You can take two options to factory reset Chromecast with Google TV, either using the Voice Remote or by using the device itself.

Using the Voice Remote

Here is how to reset Chromecast with the Voice Remote:

  • Select Profile on the upper right of your TV screen
  • Go to Settings
  • Select System
  • Select About.
  • Select Factory Reset

Follow the instructions on the TV screen to complete the process.

From the Chromecast Device Itself

Here is how to perform a factory reset using the device itself:

  • Press and hold the button at the back of the Chromecast while the device is plugged into the TV. After some seconds, the LED light should start to blink yellow.
  • Release the button when the LED light turns solid white.

The reset would be done on restart.

Chromecast (1st gen)

You can reset a Chromecast from the Google Home app, only if you still have access to the home network the device was set up on.

If you do, you can follow the steps below:

  • Open the Google Home App on your mobile device
  • Touch and hold the Your Device tile
  • Tap Settings on the top right
  • Go to More
  • Select Factory Reset
  • Confirm

You should then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the reset.

From the Chromecast Device

You can also reset your Chromecast without the need for another third-party device. To use this method,

  • Plug the Chromecast into the TV
  • Hold the button on the device for at least 25 seconds until the Solid LED Light flashes red.
  • Release the button when the LED light flashes white, and the TV turns blank.

The device will restart, and you’ll see upon restart that it has been reset.

Chromecast (2nd gen), Chromecast (3rd gen), and Chromecast Ultra

These three devices use the same method of doing a factory reset. Like with Chromecast on Google TV, there are two ways you can do it. The first is by using the Google Home app using the same steps as the previous generation. The other is by using the device itself.

Here is how to reset from the device itself:

  • Plug the Chromecast into the TV
  • Hold down the button on the side of the device. The LED light will start to blink orange.
  • Release the button when the LED light turns white

The device will restart and will be reset upon boot.

Connect Chromecast to New Account

When unlinking the Chromecast from the previous device and factory resetting it, the next step is to connect it to the new owner’s account. To do these:

  • Plug in the Chromecast
  • Download the Google Home app on the compatible mobile device of the new owner.
  • Open the Google Home app and follow the steps to link the account to Chromecast.
  • If you do not see the steps, tap the Add icon at the top left of the Google home screen.
  • Tap Set up device > New device
  • Follow the instructions on the screen to finish the process

When it’s all done, you will have successfully changed the ownership of your Chromecast device.

Conclusion

The data needs to be erased in order to change the user for a Chromecast. This is done by performing a factory reset and then setting up the device as if it were new, based on the model. It does not take long and is easy to do, with many of the steps being the same regardless of the Chromecast’s generation.
